Star Spangled Ice Cream

 photo IMG_4239-001_zps4e5e0b43.jpg

To celebrate the July fourth holiday fast approaching, we enjoyed this simple, fun, festive ice cream dessert with our friends over the weekend!

 photo fd1c72f1-754d-4562-bf03-7360a1930f4d_zpsa77aaa88.jpg

I scooped the vanilla ice cream into a bowl and let it soften just a bit, until I could stir it.  Then I transferred it into these foil pans to freeze overnight.  When we were ready to have dessert, I used a star shaped cookie cutter to cut the ice cream and then topped it with red and blue sprinkles.  It was so simple, but the kids loved it!  It's amazing what shapes and sprinkles can do to plain vanilla ice cream :)

My plan for the next time I serve this, is to cut the shapes the day before and freeze.  This will speed up the serving process a bit.  Can't wait to try our other cookie cutter shapes and different sprinkles for more summer occasions.  Thinking this would also be so fun for birthday parties as well!

Have a great Monday everyone!

Easy Summer Craft

 photo d2783355-842d-4e4b-8cc1-7d30f7b1f026_zps20ebea20.jpg

Hey there!   I hope everyone's week is going well!  With Preston at a day camp last week, Lyla and I had a few hours of one-on-one time.  She loves to draw, color, paint and do anything crafty, so we came up with this easy little project last week.  She has a small desk in her room that needs some decorating and organizing.  So after seeing this post as inspiration, we decided that a cute clipboard for her desk/room would be both decorative and functional.

Here's a reminder of my sweet girl's room :)

 photo 2014-06-231_zps3cb9641c.jpg

Really a super easy project, but fun her!  With all the supplies already on hand (clipboard, paint, heart stencil, small paint brush or Q-tips), we got to measuring and painting immediately.  And in no time we had this adorable diy heart clipboard completed <3

 photo 087a6e5f-c8cd-4b0e-9c59-48d6079e333a_zps56b118e1.jpg

It definitely added some instant cuteness to this plain, brown clipboard.  And she is, of course, so proud of her new desk accessory ;)

Have a wonderful day!

Patriotic S'mores

 photo IMG_4102-001_zpsb206e721.jpg

Did I mention how much I love the Fourth of July?   So much fun associated with this holiday and a perfect time to celebrate with s'mores!  Using scrapbook paper, I created these individual s'mores cones, so guest could grab and go.

 photo 7f51fd25-bb5e-443a-b57c-644f4362c5ed_zpsc6c70fc3.jpg

 photo d9ffc6dd-2e2e-41a5-9bf7-a59b73a81e4e_zps982bf72d.jpg

With just some basic supplies these cones all grouped together made a fun patriotic decorative piece as well.  To make the cones, the large 12x12 scrapbook paper cut in fours was the perfect size.  I wrapped the marshmallows and graham crackers in small treat bags to keep them fresh until it's time to roast the marshmallows and make the s'mores!

Front Entry Style

 photo IMG_3773-001_zps7b51d180.jpg

Happy Wednesday!  Our front entry/porch area could use a little sprucing up.  It's a small space, so I would like to keep it simple and stick to classic elements.  I created an inspiration board below to get an idea of what might work out here.

 photo frontentrystyle_zps507d5c4c.png

I would love a large doormat and boxwood planter.  And a door knocker and hanging lantern would also add a little style.  I think a welcoming entry is so important.  It's the first thing your guest see when they pull up and come to the door.

Hope everyone's week is going well.

XO

Festive Treat to Celebrate the Fourth

 photo IMG_4059-001_zps083727ba.jpg

Good Morning! How was your weekend? My daughter had her dance recital this weekend, so most of Friday (for rehearsal) and Saturday revolved around that. We celebrated Lyla's great performance at her recital and an early Father's Day celebration, by eating out at one of our favorite restaurants Saturday evening.

Now that her dance and my son's baseball is over, I feel like we can really focus on enjoying our summer.  And one of my favorite summer celebrations is the fourth of July!  I love it!  Next to Christmas, I think it's one of my favorite holidays!  Here are some super easy treats that I plan to remake to celebrate the fourth.

 photo IMG_4052-001_zps61db042b.jpg

 photo IMG_4069-001_zps64fef462.jpg

I used a simple box cake mix for the cupcakes.  I think the Duncan Hines butter recipe is really good and it's usually the one I make all my cakes and cupcakes with.  For the toppers, I used paper rosettes and pinwheels from Michael's and then cut the blue star from scrapbook paper and attached it to a red and white striped straw.  Simple, cute and festive!

Shop It Saturday

 photo summershopping_zps84a7d542.png

Happy Saturday! I usually don't post on the weekend, but I was doing some online browsing and came across several cute fashion finds that I added to my "SHOP" tab and wanted to share them here too.  Some are definitely splurges, but there are a few steals as well :)

I hope everyone is enjoying their weekend and summer.  And Happy early Father's Day wishes to all the wonderful dads out there!!

pulling it together

Good Morning!  Last week I did a guest post for a home décor series called "pulling it together" and thought I would share the full post that I wrote for that series on my site as well.  Here it is below:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

 photo IMG_3882-002_zpscc0771a8.jpg

Hi there!  I am so excited to be here today to share with you a fun, cheerful space in my home...my children's upstairs kids' zone.  I have an eight year old boy and six year old girl and even though they have their own rooms, they are joined by a jack and jill bathroom and then both open up to a playroom.  So when I thought about which room to share for this series, I felt like this would be a perfect space to show you how I "pulled it all together" for my children

 photo IMG_3976-001_zpsab2cb97b.jpg

First up is my daughter Lyla's room.  We changed up her room a bit at the being of this year and my main goal was to create a space that would fit her personality and that she could grow with.  Previously we had LOTS of pink and I really wanted to bring in another color.  I had a yellow room growing up, so I wanted to incorporate some yellow in her space :)  We started with purchasing the oversized, metallic gold heart from Urban Walls and then worked on the bedding.  At first, I was focused on keeping it just yellow and white, but she still had so many pink dolls and accessories, that we added some pink in as well.  The pom-pom garland and gilded arrow were DIYs that added some fun touches to her room that she adores!

 photo prestonsrm2_zps03bcee07.png

 photo IMG_4084-001_zps63c730b2.jpg

Next up is my son Preston's room.  I love the gray, orange and turquoise combination for a boy's room, so I decided to go with those colors in his room.  I started with purchasing this gray and white striped bedding and then added in the other colors.  The white horns were my grandfather's and the wall initial and desk were DIYs.  He really wanted a desk, but his room is on the smaller side, so we created this space saver desk next to his bed.  It's simple, functional and most important made him happy!

 photo IMG_7123_zps856ca524.jpg

And the final area in our upstairs space is our playroom, which both of my children's rooms open up to.  In here, I went with bright, bold colors and lots of cubbies for toy storage.  This room is rather large and gets lots of use.  I love the end result with this space.  It's comfortable, functional and organized which makes clean up a lot easier :)

Becky

Ice Cream Pie

So how was your weekend?  Ours was finally one with no set plans, which is always a welcomed change.  We spent much of Saturday at our friends' home swimming and grilling out and then Sunday at church, cleaning and organizing at home.  I have been waiting for the right occasion and warm weather to give this ice cream pie recipe a try and this weekend was perfect to do just that.  And it was even more delicious than I imagined!!  Graham cracker crust + vanilla ice + candy pieces + warm caramel sauce = scrumptious!!

 photo icecreampie_zpsb9f68419.jpg

Ice Cream Pie with Caramel Sauce

Ingredients

Crust

18 graham crackers (1 cracker equals the whole large 4 section graham)
1/3 cup of melted butter

Filling

2 pints vanilla ice cream
4 Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, roughly chopped
2 Butterfinger bars, roughly chopped

Caramel Sauce

1 cup packed brown sugar
4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) butter
1/2 cup half and half
pinch of salt
1 tablespoon vanilla

Method

For the crust:  Preheat over to 350 degrees.  Crush graham crackers in a resealable plastic bag.  Pour crumbs into bowl with melted butter and mix.  Press into pie pan and bake about 5 minutes.  Set aside to cool completely.

For the filling:  Remove vanilla ice cream and allow to soften slightly.  Mix in candy pieces and then pour mixture over cooled crust.  Cover with foil and freeze until very hard - 1 to 2 hours or over night.

For caramel sauce:  Mix the brown sugar, half and half, butter and salt in saucepan over medium-low heat.  Whisk gently while cooking for about 5 to 7 minutes or until thicker.  Add vanilla and cook another minute to thicken.  Allow to cool to desired temperature.

Serve with cooled or slightly warm caramel sauce over the top.

Enjoy!
